Bike Basics 🌼
You don't need to own a mountain bike to be part of DirtDaisy. If you already have a bike and you're not sure it will work on the trail, start here.
Will my bike work?
Most riders start with something simpler than they expect. Here's what a typical DirtDaisy ride actually calls for. We can't check your bike from here — a local shop can give it a quick once-over — but this is the plain-language version.
What you need
These are the basic safety expectations for joining a DirtDaisy ride — not a full mountain bike spec. Different rides and trails ask for different things.
- A properly fitting bike that suits the ride or trail
- Working front and rear brakes
- Tires appropriate for dirt and trail riding
- A bike in safe working condition
- A properly fitting helmet
- Closed-toe shoes
- Water
Nice for comfort
- Front suspension — rougher or more technical trails can call for more capable equipment, so check the ride or trail details, or ask a bike shop if you're unsure
- Gloves
- Eye protection
You'll see these, but skip them for now
- Full suspension
- Dropper post
- Mountain-bike-specific shoes
- Upgraded pedals
- Premium or high-end components
You do not need an expensive mountain bike, and you do not need everything you'll see experienced riders using. Plenty of riders start on a borrowed bike with basic gear. You can learn what works for you as you ride — the gear can come later.
The right bike starts with the right fit
A mountain bike should fit your body and feel comfortable and controllable. A bike that's too large or too small can make learning harder and less enjoyable.
Not sure what size you need? That's normal. A local bike shop can help you find the right size and make basic adjustments so you're comfortable on the bike.
